The L3 is an extension of the L2 design, specifically for playing a supporting role on second trombone. It achieves the same wide dynamic range as the L2, but with a much deeper cup suited to mid to low range playing. The final design combines a deep V-shaped cup with a large shoulder into an open throat, mated to a short and conservative backbore, and utilizing Harry’s classic Retro Blank to enhance projection and add color to the sound. Other tweaks to the shank engagement and throat shape balance out the design and overall blow.
The result is a mouthpiece capable of providing the perfect base for the principal trombone to sit on. The player can enjoy a warm tone in the middle and lower registers, while still providing a full, supported tone in the upper register when called upon.
Specs:
Cup: Deep (slightly deeper than the classic 5G cup, but V-shaped)
Throat: Open. N reamer, long hourglass shape (enhances presence and dynamic range, darkens sound)
Backbore: Medium-short, conservative (balances throat dimensions, balances overall blow)
Finish: All mouthpieces are hand finished and come in bright silver-plate. Gold-plate is available only for invoiced orders – please use the contact form for gold-plate.
