Harry developed the L1 while searching for a mouthpiece that would enable him to get through long recitals and brass-heavy concerts as principal trombonist. Various challenges were tackled with the design. How to create a balance between easy access to the upper register while keeping access to the lower register? How to increase the endurance factor without losing the fullness and core of the sound? The final design settled on a true “medium” cup depth, similar to the classic 6 ½AL cup, mated to a long and open backbore, and utilizing Harry’s classic Retro Blank to enhance projection and add color to the sound. Other tweaks to the shank engagement and throat shape balance out the design and overall blow.

The result is a mouthpiece that delivers a classic tenor voice with lots of core and just the right amount of color. The player can enjoy easy access to the full range of their instrument, and increased endurance to help them get through long concerts and recitals, all the way to that last high F.

Backbore:  Long, Open (balances medium cup, darkens sound and opens up the blow)
