Building on the initial L1 design, Harry sought out a way to get even more performance out of the L series. While performing with large ensembles, especially as a soloist, the need for greater dynamic control and a wider dynamic “gamut” often exceeds the need for more endurance. Various challenges were tackled with this design. How to keep the easy playing characteristics of the L1 while increasing the overall dynamic range? How to increase presence and projection without losing too much of the endurance factor? The final design modifies the L1 cup with a larger shoulder into a much larger throat, mated to a shorter and more conservative backbore, and utilizing Harry’s classic Retro Blank to enhance projection and add color to the sound. Other tweaks to the shank engagement and throat shape balance out the design and overall blow.
The result is a mouthpiece with the most “presence” and widest dynamic range (from pianissimo to fortissimo) of our catalogue. Similar to the L1, the player can enjoy easy access to the full range of the instrument, and an increased endurance factor over conventional mouthpiece designs. Unlike the L1, this mouthpiece trends towards solving technical challenges with air rather than finesse.
