The A1 is the classic alto trombone mouthpiece. One of the primary reasons Harry started making mouthpieces was to create mouthpieces that made the alto an accessible and viable option for live performances. The A1 uses a cup that is between the classic 12C and 15EW (Bach alto mouthpiece) depths, but allowing for an inner-rim diameter and rim profile that is comfortable for the modern orchestral trombonist. Gone are the days of using an uncomfortably small rim to achieve an appropriate sound on alto. The A1 utilizes a relatively tight .227″ throat with a short cylindrical section, allowing for a long and balanced backbore. This combination allows for a characteristic bright sound on alto without feeling overly restrictive. The A1 trends towards finesse to solve technical challenges rather than “throwing air”. The design utilizes a lighter version of Harry’s classic Retro Blank to enhance projection and add color to the sound. Special care has been taken with the overall length, shank taper, and shank engagement to allow for the best intonation possible across the full range of the alto trombone.
The result is a mouthpiece that is perfect for performances of classical repertoire and concertos with chamber ensembles, as well as performances on the recital stage.
